Please Let the Art Speak to Them

There was a buzz allover social media about a gigantic 25ft sculpture made of bronze which was erected some months back at the Rockerfeller center, New York .

This imposing structure right at the heart of Rockerfeller center was designed by Sanford Biggers, combining the African masks and European figures to explore mythologies of both cultures.

I salute his efforts but I do have an issue with art. I think a better job could have been done with the facial features. I dare say it looks like the stereotypical African-booty scratcher .

I wish he had used great African mask references which the continent is blessed with or tried going a bit abstract with the facial features.

If your work speaks about Africans but doesn’t speak to Africans, then it is not really for Africans.
